If you wish to get to know the culture and tradition of the place that you will be going to, the best thing that you can do is to break bread with the locals. Before you do that, it is recommended that you gather some information about the dining customs of your chosen destination. You may be surprised to know that there are some countries that have some peculiar dining customs. Here are some of the dining customs that you need to know about:

  • Tamada (Toastmaster) Duties in Georgia

In the event that you have been invited to a celebratory feast in Georgia, you should understand the fact that it is the tamada or the toastmaster that introduces every toast. The tamada would usually be the host. For larger celebration, the duty will fall to the person that will be assigned by the family or the group. The one thing that you need to know is that the tamada should be able to hold their drink. They must not show any signs of intoxication during the entire feast. The role of a tamada is usually designated to men only.

  • Cheese Cutting in France

You will be surprised to know that cheese is served on almost all parts of the meal—dessert, appetizer and the likes. The key to avoid offending the locals is not in the timing but in the way you cut your cheese. When cutting cheese in France, you must avoid cutting the tip. Additionally, you must make sure that the dough and rind of the cheese are fairly distributed.

  • Vodka rules in Russia

When you are in Russia, you must be aware of the fact that the locals find it rude when you open a bottle of vodka without finishing it. This is true regardless of how drunk you get during the entire process. In addition to that, you must also not add any mixer to the drink as they find it respectful to the vodka.

  • The Crayfish song in Sweden

In the event that you will be traveling to Sweden during the late summer months, then there is a high chance that you will find yourself in a crayfish party. This is a festival wherein people eat cray fish while wearing silly bibs and hats. If you plan on attending one, it is recommended that you make an effort and spend some time to memorize the lyrics of their song.

In addition to planning your meals for your next trip, you also have to make some research about the weird dining customs of the destination you will be going to. IN this way, you can avoid making moves or actions that might offend the locals in the dining table.
